Introduction to Pharmacogenomics: Introduction into the Future of Medicine

·         Assistant Professor, Pharmacy Practice Department, Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii

At the completion of this activity nurses, pharmacists, and physicians should be better able to:

·         Describe the fundamentals of clinical and genetic-based variability in drug response

·         Explain the role of pharmacogenetic testing to personalize patient care

·         Evaluate the role of pharmacogenetic testing to improve clinical outcomes

At the completion of this activity pharmacy technicians should be better able to:

·         List the sources responsible for variability in response to medications

·         Explain how pharmacogenetics can help patient receive the right medication, dose, and frequency

·         Describe example drugs that are greatly affected by patient’s genetics
